The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) officially commenced its 74th Annual Council Meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Burma Hall, Accra. The prestigious five-day event brought together delegates from the Council’s five member countries—The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone—to deliberate on the future of educational assessment in the sub-region.
The meeting was formally opened by Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana. In her keynote address, she commended WAEC for its seven decades of resilience and its role in maintaining high educational standards.
A highlight of the opening ceremony was the presentation of the International Excellence Awards for the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates. Ghana achieved a historic milestone as three Ghanaian students swept all three top international prizes:
• Overall Best Candidate (1st Prize):
Huda Suglo Suleman
(Legacy Girls’ College, Akuse)
• Second Best Candidate (2nd Prize):
Paula Adzo Elinam Sowu
(Legacy Girls’ College, Akuse)
• Third Best Candidate (3rd Prize):
Matthea Aba Andoh
(Hope College)

The Council also took the opportunity to honour Professor William Afiakwa Asomaning, an eminent Ghanaian citizen, with the prestigious Distinguished Friend of Council Award. The award recognises his long-standing and exceptional contributions to the success of WAEC’s activities both in Ghana and across the West African sub-region.

As part of the week-long programme, the 31st WAEC Endowment Fund Lecture was held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Alisa Hotel, Accra – Ghana.
Professor George K. T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Education and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, delivered the lecture on the theme: “Fostering Assessment Integrity within a Cultural Context of Credentialism”. The lecture explored the challenges posed by an over-reliance on academic certificates and proposed strategies to safeguard the integrity of the assessment process in a competitive educational landscape.
The 74th Council Meeting serves as a vital platform for member countries to chart a forward-looking path for the Council. Beyond the celebrations of excellence, delegates are engaged in strategic sessions to address examination malpractice and enhance the digital transition of assessments to meet global standards.
